Ephesus was first a small city state, then at the Roman Emperor, Augustus period it became the capital of Asian Province. Population of the city became more than 200,000 people in 1-2 BC. In 6 BC. science, art and culture became the most important features of the city same as Miletus. Famous savant Heracleitos, dream interpretor Artemidorus, poet Callions and Hipponax, grammer savant Zenodotus and doctor Soramos and Rufus are from Ephesus.

At the Roman period the city became the biggest and the richest in Asia through sea and land trade. All of the city is covered with monumental architecture made from marble made city. In 4 BC. trade reggested because the harbour was collapsed couple of times. But harbour was congested with alluvion river. Ephesus was moved away from the sea by this way.
